27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) has unveiled the selection of her Golden Goblet Awards, in which 49 films are competing in five categories.
This year’s version has set new records, with more than 2,800 submissions from 119 countries and regions, the competition classes have marked a significant increase in entries from the US and Africa. Short film submission alone increased by 18% year-on-year.
The main competition has 12 titles spread in various fields. These include Chile-UK-French co-production “after the fog” Mirium Hurd, Kyrgyzstan’s “Black Red Yellow” from Akatan Aimkat, and “Cyclon” of Brazilian directed by Flevia Castro. Chinese cinema represents wells with entries including “my father’s son” (Kiu Sheng), “One Vesi Summer” (Cao Bapping), and “Wild Nights, Taned Beasts” (Wang Tong). This section in Poland’s “Los of Balance” (Korek Bojanowski), Germany’s “Luisa” (Julia Rosler), Japan’s “Summer Sand” (Shinya Tamada), Argentina-Span-Chip’s “The Reborn” (Santiago Estia), Portugal-Brazil, which is remembered ” “Angel, Mr. Drovak?” (Nicholas Steiner).
The Asian new talent competition highlights emerging filmmakers with 12 titles, including China’s “AS the Water Flow” (Bian Zhuo), “Auds Beater” (Cheng Liang), “Coven Deed” (Kiu UG), “The Last Summer” (Shi Renefei), and “Water Cain Avani” (Fong Liang). Japan’s “Brand New Landscape” (Yuga Dengeuka), Fresh from the beginning of your earAnd Türkiye’s “Grace for Sale” (Gojde Yatikin, Emere Serrt) and “Kanto” (ENSAR ULTE) scored the international entries. The section also includes India’s “Victoria” (Shivranjini J), Iran’s “The Daughter” (Paurya Kakwand), Sri Lanka’s “Revreston” (Lalith Rathnayake), and an Italy-Pilipin cum-making “Whore The Night Stand” (Lirik Dela Cruze).
Five titles have been presented in the documentary category: Iran’s “A Part of the Land” (Neema Mahidian ASL), Mexico’s “Brigade 2045” (Olivia Lueningas Magana), China’s “Catcher on the Moon” (Consuming), Spain’s “Consteza”, Spain’s “Consteza” (AGSTIN Mirkes Gauge “, and Loses, and Loses, and Loses, and Loses, Steiner Ander).
The animation category includes Li Wei, Veng Ming, Shinichiro Watanbe, and a China co-producing “a China co-producing”. In international entries, Iran’s “Dead in the Water” (Leela Hekmatania), France’s “Joona is leaving” (Jonathan millet), Portugal’s “Judite, or First Rebelian” (Pedro Carniro), Peru’s “The and of the World” (Alexandro Mosk) (Jordan) (Jordan) Novelo).
Animated Short Film Category scored the competition with five titles: Poland-France’s “I am not here anor” (Navojka Wirezbowska), Belgium’s “Little Story” (Mirjam Plates), China’s “Love Music Friends” (Ju Zao), Rousia-Kajamambata K.
Italian director and screenwriter Guseppe TornarThe Oscar winner for “cinema Paradiso” will preside over the International Jury Panel. “A film festival is not just a celebration of cinema; it is an opportunity to come together with people from different countries, exchange ideas and appreciate extraordinary films,” said Tornetor. “I am honored for serving as a jurner in SIFF and enjoying these incredible tasks with my fellow jury members in Shanghai.”
This year’s version has introduced several first first, including the merger of SIFF Film Bazar with the market of Shanghai TV Festival to create an integrated international film and TV market. The Utsav also launched the Asia Now section highlighting regional approaches. Directed by the principles of “Asian, Chinese film, and new talents”, this year’s festival features about 60 Chinese films in competition entries, premiere, and restored classics.
The festival runs on 13-22 June, followed by Shanghai TV Festival from 23 June to 27 June.
