This is only her first year as Berlinley Artistic Director, but Trio One of Europe’s biggest film festivals has already been approved. When we meet in the middle of the 75th annual Berlin Film FestivalWhich has so far seen Robert Pattinson, Timothy Chelmet, Jessica Chasten and Jacob Alfi to Touching in Germany, Tutal has not shown any signs of sleep deficiency or slowing down. At the same time, she always knew that it was not an easy task.
An Erudite lover of films and a straight-shooter, Tutal-Ek American who lived in Europe for so long that he has adopted a hybrid British accent-it is a difficulty that it is a difficult due to the political upheaval in Germany. It has been the year. The run away till the national election on Sunday. Then there are increasing pressure for Berlinley to take one side in the Gaza-Israel conflict. (The perspective of the tatal has been to stay neutral and embrace cinema from all over the world.)
These tension on one side, Tutal has pleased with the reception of the 2025 version of the Berlinley, which is closed. Tilda Swinton gave a political speech About the importance of artistic expression because he accepted a golden lion for the achievement of a career.
Tutle, who led the BFI London Film Festival with great success for the first five years, says that he increased the number of screening of two new places (including stage blumax theater) at the festival headquarters in Potsdamar Plotz to Berlinley to Berlinley Help to resume, as well as host each major screening and bring talent and filmmakers on stage for the following film presentations of Mini-Qu and A. And when Tutal is eager to walk on the footsteps of the studio or venice, to woo the studio and Bermlin to woo the stars, do not expect him to determine an additional 15 minutes for the standing ovation. “I love filmmakers,” she says. “But we are not in the business of measuring length!”
We saw that the opening ceremony looked very different from before – last year, for example, government members gave speeches on stage. Was this your decision?
It is all about a different kind of energy. There is definitely a strategic plan. This is not easy to talk, because I am not going to plan my five -year plan for all, but a part of it is about making a different kind of environment and a different kind of energy. And there is no fear of the fact that we are a public audience festival. We are in a political city. We are in a city that is engaged in intellectual, cultural and politically. If we try to deny that it would be a very bizarre burlyl. But we want to make a place for anyone to say what they have to say, and make sure we defend that right.
A variety of audiences are required that may be burlyless. It can be a place to launch big films. This can be a place to screen intimate films. This can be a place where we have films that affect the world of art. It has always been.
Do you think you have achieved that balance with your lineup this year?
Yes, I think we have definitely done this. And some of them were also about to ensure that our spaces actually work. I hope people have felt what we have done in Potsdamer Plots. This is the beginning, but it seems very different than the previous year. We have two new places, including stage Bloomax theater, which is a 500 -seat screening room, which we are using five times a day for press screening. In the morning, we have participated in very well free public talks, every morning a pair of talks, meet together for filmmakers during lunch.
How did it feel to listen to Tilda Swinton’s speech when opened at night? We saw that when you distribute it, you were on stage.
It looked really beautiful. I heard it before the night, and I was very, very much further. It is incredibly eloquently, as always occurs when Tilda speaks. I hoped that people had nothing less than this to attack the core. The entire opening ceremony looked really amazing, what should be really for that particular moment. You know, it will be different every year, I am sure, but we have a difficult year. We have to resume some confidence as a festival, and for me, realized that we showed the moment that we have.
Why did you need to gain confidence?
everyone knows. This is no secret. It has been a very difficult year here because we are a festival where people speak. We have been in the midst of many very polarized debates in the last year. And it can be a difficult place. Many times this has happened, where I felt excessive pressure from everyone on different sides – especially with war in Gaza, that we are all disappointed, everyone wants something different from the Berlinley and from Berlinley The more that seems to be the bullet is able to give. And I feel that we have rebuilt our confidence, because we have said, “This is a platform where people can have conversation,” and it is not about the festival that it needs to be a voice. It is every filmmaker here, and filmmakers have to live here to become a voice. We have thought that space and II during the opening night and festival, you have represented a lot of approaches.
Are you worried about far away rise in Germany?
Yes, but I think everywhere is worried about far away rise. We are worried about all the things that I think people around the world are worried in their countries. European countries are made on the history of immigration, and it is very bizarre that we are living in a moment, where suddenly, there is a powerful push like there. The great value of what Berlinley created is that we are a place where people can come together from all over the world, and we can celebrate it, and we can communicate with each other. So of course, I am worried about this, as everything else is.
For example, unlike Cannes, Berlinley is a public organization funded by the government. How are you guessing that if you are good for Germany for a distant party option in the national election on Sunday, then you can have some pressure?
The important thing for us is that we take one day a day. We have to think about the political scenario. We create relationships where we can, I think in Germany, Democratic parties are really clear how they work together. We can work with everyone there. We will take it one step at once. We will see what happens after Sunday.
In any case, you have placed a strong jury together in the leadership of Todd Hens and Lineup, such as a lot of stars in mixes such as Timothy Chalmat and Jessica Chastain. How important is Star Power for Berlinley?
This is really important, but it goes back to what I was talking about, about the width. This is definitely not all this, but it attracts new audiences. And I think cinema has always been in love with onscreen talent. It has been for at least 100 years. We have made stories around those we recognize. In this way people connect with cinema. Cinefiles connect with cinema in many different ways. We love directors, we love stories, we love political topics, we love subjects. Some people also come in cinema because they are coming through a star from which they are connected. As a child, I remember, Goldie Havan took me on a trip. Paul Numan took me on a trip. In this way you introduce new people to cinema, and it is exciting. This is really good, really good because they are also stars who love cinema, and they are actually making interesting films. They are not just because they are stars. They are here because they are fully committed to making cinema like which we are also excited about.
How did you convince Timothy Chalmet to come here with a special screening of “A full unknown”?
I called him. I said, “Timmy …!” No. ,Laughs) I would say, good relationships with the studio – so Disney, Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics and Warner Brothers. This year we have films that are at the right time where we can support them with their campaigns. But they also want us to do well; What I feel from the industry is that the whole industry really wants a strong berlin. Some companies are leaping with us already this year, and I hope other companies will jump next year as well, as well, if they are waiting to see what looks like a Berlinley.
Today is the fifth day of the festival. How are you feeling?
fantastic. Really amazing. I have received a lot of positive response from public audiences, like people are stopping me on the road and are very excited. The way we are competing this year, it is a bit different that I is either on the stage and asking the filmmakers some questions. It is a big festival and has to do many things, and it will never satisfy everyone, but I think there are many people who have found it very rich this year, and it really makes me happy.
Yes, and we have seen you everywhere, screening, parties – really everywhere!
Actually, I am like Mickey 17. You are actually talking to Trissia 7.
Yes, it is fun. “Mickey 17” was well obtained. It found a permanent ovation, but it was not longer as an ovation standing in the ear or veinnis. Do you want to allow time for him?
I have to say that I know that the cinema who likes it cannot stand a clap-o-meter because it is just a complete nonsense. I am falling in love with filmmakers. But we are not in the business of measuring length!
